ANN PELANNE

I'm a visual artist and photographer. My main techniques are digital photography and drawing, but also analog photography (film/dark-room-based) and painting. The essential element in my working process is the harmony and the rhythm in old, harsh or worn-out surroundings, the beauty of the so called ugly and forgotten. The main thing for me is to discover the hidden and to give it a chance to prove its value and unique.

My interest in photography dates back a long time, before turning professional in 2001. My dark-room technique has been learnt over many years studying under different photographers, of which Andrej Scherbakov-Parland has to be named number one. My photographs are generally un-posed, un-staged and make use of natural lighting.

My camera is my paint-brush was the headline in the newspaper Västra Nyland after my exhibition in Billnäs (Finland) during the summer 2007. In the article you could also read: As well as photos the works of art could be paintings, because that is what they look like. Light and harmony of colours, as well as the structure of lines and rhythm are fascinating and important elements of my art, but I also think that asperity and rough-and-readiness are parts of art as well as of life. When I have taken the photo, I don´t touch it anymore, i.e. I don´t manipulate my photos, I want them to be intact and authentic. That´s my philosophy. For the same reason I love to draw with Indian Ink, because when I draw a line, I can´t change it anymore. I find it fascinating and challenging! Painting counterbalances the drawing by giving more time to reflect on the working process.

I live and work in Hanko, Finland.
